Sponsoring a Microchip Clinic

With the new AKC CAR ID System™, hosting a microchip clinic is both easy and beneficial.  Microchip clinics provide an easy means for fundraising and help you to promote your organization as well as responsible dog ownership.  You can also earn free microchips for future clinics through our Free Microchip Program.  For more information about the Free Microchip Program, click here

There are 2 microchip/enrollment options for your clinic:

  • Purchase AKC CAR ID System™ microchips with discounted pre-paid enrollments
  • If you use another brand of microchip, enroll pets with AKC CAR’s recovery service for $9.95 (clinic rate)

To get started with organizing a microchip clinic through AKC Companion Animal Recovery, simply follow these two easy steps at least two weeks prior to your clinic:

Once these steps have been completed, you will need to recruit staff to run the clinic.  AKC CAR recommends that microchips be implanted by, or under the direct supervision of, a veterinarian.  Typically you will need at least two people to handle the microchip implantations—one person to hold the animal and one to implant the microchip.  We recommend that you recruit additional volunteers to handle paperwork.

You will need the following materials at the clinic:

  • Microchips
  • A Universal Scanner
  • AKC CAR Enrollment Forms
  • AKC CAR Promotional Materials

AKC CAR is committed to supporting your microchip clinic.  Additionally, we will provide free promotional materials and templates (distributed via email) of a flyer, a media alert and a press release that you can customize to announce your microchip clinic.

Helpful Hints for Hosting a Successful Microchip Clinic:

  • Plan early!  You must complete the clinic request form  and order the microchips at least two weeks prior to event
  • Work with a vet you are familiar with and arrange for them to volunteer their time to implant microchips at your clinic
  • Have a set time for your clinic (i.e. 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.) to maximize turnout and not waste the volunteers’ time
  • Have a table available to place small animals on while implanting the microchip
  • If your event will be held outdoors, have an alternate rain date and list this date on all promotional materials

AKC Companion Animal Recovery shares your commitment to safeguarding the well-being of the animals who enrich our lives.  As a not-for-profit organization, we fund veterinary student scholarships, canine search and rescue efforts, disaster relief and other programs benefiting the companion animal community.
